Strood Green Gets a Spruce Up!

While work at the new Strood Green Shop races ahead, residents were pleasantly surprised to see the area getting an early spring clean.

A team of offenders worked under the “Community Payback Scheme” to decorate the inside of the shop. However they also had time  to cut the grass on the island, trim the edges and sweep up. One resident commented “it’s nice to see the area being cared for; the grass is usually left so long before being cut”

The scheme is run by The Surrey Probation Board. The compulsory unpaid work varies from environmental projects to supporting local charities. However, all the different types of work provided are either physically or intellectually demanding.

Projects typically include garden or conservation work, painting and decorating, cleaning and shop work. The offenders will need to use problem solving skills as well as practical skills to complete the projects.

The board would like to encourage Surrey communities, faith groups, businesses, voluntary groups and local authorities to nominate projects in which they would like to see the Probation Service become involved. Once the project is accepted, and when the work is completed, it will be branded with the Community Payback logo to show where offenders have made a positive contribution to the neighbourhood
